13 tips and tricks for applying epoxy coatings

It doesn't matter if it's your first time mixing epoxy resin, or if you've been a pro at it. You should always remember these 15 tips and tricks to achieve excellent results on your epoxy project.
TIPS FOR PREPARING EPOXY RESIN MIXTURE
- The first thing to do is plan your work. You need to think through the entire procedure before you begin. You must ensure your substrate is ready. Only start mixing your epoxy resin once you have carefully read the instructions and have all the necessary tools within easy reach.
- If you are using the mixture for the first time, be sure to make a few sample batches to determine the curing time (only if you have excess product or a small sample kit). This will also help you understand its physical properties, texture changes, and the initial setup process. Once your product is thoroughly mixed, you can apply it to your substrate.
- On highly glossy surfaces, you must sand the entire surface with a pad of at least 150 grit. Most epoxy products are low-VOC or VOC-free; therefore, the substrate must be properly prepared for maximum adhesion. Furthermore, it is important to keep in mind that your surface must be clean before using the epoxy resin mixture. You don't want any dust in your final product!
- You should use a fresh brush and clean it with the sticky side of masking tape before mixing the epoxy. This will help remove any loose fibers from the brush and will also require a little cleaning before your epoxy starts to harden. You should use a bristle brush or a bristle roller for excellent results. However, if sanding is necessary, a chip brush will also do the job.
- Do not store your epoxy in extremely cold or dry environments. Heat accelerates the curing process, and cold can hinder epoxy adhesion. Ensure that the room and floor temperatures are not too high, or the epoxy may not adhere properly.
TIPS FOR APPLYING EPOXY RESIN MIXTURE
- Epoxies that cure at room temperature, such as CCR and CLR, are highly sensitive to humidity and temperature. Therefore, do not apply epoxy resins for hot coating and lamination in cold temperatures, on surfaces prone to condensation, or on days with high humidity.
- For faster curing times, let the epoxy resin mixture rest for a few minutes before pouring. Keep in mind that high temperatures can accelerate curing times. So, if heat is a problem, use ice packs in a zip-top bag or plastic bag to cool the bucket/container you're mixing. Additionally, you can slow down the curing process by adding a small amount of paint thinner, which will extend pot life.
- Spread a thin layer of well-mixed epoxy, first using a squeegee, then use a brush to finish the edges. You can also use the "W" method to ensure an even finish and then roll over it with a back roller to reduce air bubbles and help smooth out any areas that might have excess epoxy.
- If you need to use more epoxy resin, let the first coat dry and apply the second coat approximately 2 hours later, or until it hardens. Also, for best results, apply the resin in a crisscross or "W" pattern, and allow it time to settle before it begins to harden.
TIPS FOR CLEANING AND HARDENING EPOXY RESIN MIXTURE
- Always remain on site until the resin has bonded and cured, as surface contamination can lead to low spots and fish eyes on any project. If time is short, monitor the area the following day to ensure proper curing has occurred.
- Use a slower-curing resin if the curing time is too fast. Similarly, use a fast-curing hardener if the curing time is too slow.
- Allow the epoxy to cure at room temperature. Remove the tape 1 to 2 hours after the resin has begun to harden. If a cut is necessary, be sure to make it where both the flooring and the epoxy are 75% cured. Once fully cured, mechanical removal and sanding will be required. Additionally, once the dripping has stopped, you will need to remove the edging tape. Note: Use only painter's tape or 3M taping tape. The tape will remove any paint already applied to the surfaces.
- Use only denatured alcohol for cleaning. It's easy to clean the squeegees once the epoxy has fully cured (this takes overnight). Let your tools soak in a bucket of cleaning solution overnight, then wipe off the cured epoxy and clean with denatured alcohol. Make sure they are completely dry! It's always best to use a new brush each time if it fits your budget. Also, if any of the materials come into contact with your skin, you must remove them immediately using warm water and soap. Do not touch your eyes!
