SafeCoat® Latex Intumescent Coating is a single-component, latex intumescent fire retardant coating suitable for interior applications on a variety of combustible substrates, including SPF (spruce/pine/fir) plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), wood trusses, and wood-frame construction, where flame spread ratings of 25 or less (“Class A” or Class 1) and low smoke developed ratings are required. It limits flame spread by expanding to several times the original dry film thickness when exposed to heat. This expanded material forms a char that insulates the substrate from heat and reduces available oxygen at the surface. It provides a "Class A" flame spread rating of 25 or less as tested according to ASTM E84 and CAN/ULC S102. SafeCoat® Latex is certified with UL/ULC listings for this classification.

Pouvoir couvrant :
    See product sheet.
Temps de séchage :
Second coat: 1 to 2 hours Complete drying: 48 hours
Nettoyage des outils :
    Warm soapy water
Composition:
    White Latex
Utilisation recommandée :
SafeCoat® latex can be applied by brush, roller, or airless sprayer. Airless equipment is most recommended. Use Graco Model 450 or larger units or other long-stroke piston units. Alternatives include "Hero" gravity-fed units or other diaphragm units. Use a 16-21,000 opening with a 12-inch fan for optimal results. Apply evenly over the entire surface. If thinning is necessary, use only clean water and do not exceed 200 ml per gallon. Surface and ambient temperatures must be maintained above 50°F (10°C) during application and must Remain in this condition for at least 48 hours after application.
SafeCoat® Latex is intended for interior use only. If the coated substrate is subject to frequent washing, a topcoat of latex paint is required. Tests have shown that SafeCoat® Latex, topcoated with another latex paint, maintains its Class A flame spread rating. Additional coats have not been tested and therefore cannot be recommended. Before applying a topcoat, consult the manufacturer or its representative.
A wet film thickness gauge may be used at the beginning of application to ensure that sufficient SafeCoat® Latex has been applied. At an application rate of 150 sq ft/USG, the wet film thickness should be 10.7 mils and will result in a dry film thickness of 5.0 mils. To provide an ignition barrier over spray foam insulation, apply at 80 sq ft/USG. If a thermal barrier is required for the foam to meet fire codes, 3/8" OSB covered with SafeCoat® Latex will provide both a thermal and ignition barrier. The application of SafeCoat® Latex must be uniform and leave no exposed surfaces or edges uncoated. If the wood is pre-coated, it must be checked after installation to ensure that construction procedures have not created any exposed uncoated areas. Touch up all exposed areas with SafeCoat® Latex.
Préparation de surface
Surface preparation must be carried out in accordance with good painting practices. Remove any loose or powdery paint, dirt, grease, oil, wax, and other foreign matter with a suitable cleaner and allow them to dry completely. Repair cracks, holes, and surface imperfections, and dull smooth or glossy surfaces with sandpaper. To prevent tannin stains, new wood surfaces should be coated with a stain-resistant primer. This is particularly recommended when coating oriented strand board (OSB).

Safecoat fire-resistant paint is a coating specially designed to retard the spread of fire and protect surfaces from extreme temperatures.
Informations supplémentaires :
Chemical Composition: Safecoat fire-resistant paint is typically composed of a blend of special flame-retardant resins, flame-retardant additives, and pigments. These components work together to form a protective barrier against fire.

Certification and Standards: Safecoat paint is often designed to meet the requirements of international standards and certifications for fire resistance. For example, it may be certified to ASTM E84, UL 723, or BS 476, which assess flame spread and smoke development potential.

Coat Thickness: To achieve optimal fire protection, it is important to adhere to the recommended Safecoat paint thickness. This information is generally specified by the manufacturer and may vary depending on the surface type and the desired level of protection.

Durability: The lifespan of Safecoat fire-resistant paint may vary depending on various factors, such as weather exposure, use, and proper surface maintenance. Some Safecoat products also offer increased abrasion and chemical resistance, making them a durable option for many applications. It is important to refer to the manufacturer's specifications and recommendations for precise technical details on the specific Safecoat product you intend to use. This information provided by the manufacturer will help you make informed decisions regarding the application of Safecoat fire-resistant paint for your project.
